FYI

Please pass this information to post graduate students interested in doing
fieldwork on social and environmental issues in Andean Countries.

The Paramo Andino Project – PPA (www.condesan.
org/ppa) is offering up to
US$10,000 to MA students, and US$15,000 to PhD students working on issues
relevant to the project.

The Proyecto Páramo Andino assists to overcome the major threats to the biodiversity and the hydrological and other environmental services and functions of the Andean Páramo. The project objective is to support the conservation and sustainable use of the biodiversity of the páramo ecosystem. Specifically, the project will (i) implement examples of good practice in páramo management at nine critical páramo sites, (ii) support different governmental and non governmental institutions to adopt key policies for páramo conservation, (iii) increase the technical capacity of páramo inhabitants and field practitioners to manage the páramo, (iv) increase awareness and information about the páramo among decision makers and the population in general, and (v) replicate best lessons of the project to other areas and scales at Andean level.
One vital point to overcome the major barriers is to fill knowledge gaps and collect, integrate and analyze available information on the páramo ecosystem at an integrated Andean scale, developing adequate information to support decision making processes in Páramo regions. To do this we are promoting these fellowships for a second and last opportunity.
We would like to encourage you to develop a research in the Páramo of Peru because is the more unknown and less studied among the Andean countries.
Apart of 5 central themes described on the attached documents, we will consider also proposals that could help monitoring the project in its biophysical and socioeconomic aspects.
We will receive applications for post graduate students working on their Master or PhD thesis, but we also welcome proposals developed by a research team linked with a high mountain research institution.

We will receive applications until January 26, 2009. Results will be publisehd on March 16, 2009.
As a National Agency of Páramo Andino Project in Peru, we would like to receive your pre-proposals to give our suggestions regarding the good connection between the proposal and the project needs. More details about his announcement can be found here:
